Meet KJ Phillips, ATP/SMS, Founder of Adaptive Solutions

For more than a decade, Kevin “KJ” Phillips, ATP/SMS, has worked in the complex world of assistive technology, seating, and mobility, helping people find solutions that support their independence, function, and everyday lives.

Now, through Adaptive Solutions, KJ is bringing that experience beyond the traditional clinic setting.

Adaptive Solutions provides ATP exam preparation, professional education, one-on-one consulting, and training for organizations working in assistive technology and complex rehabilitation technology (CRT).

The goal is straightforward: make complex seating and assistive technology easier to understand and apply.

Who Is KJ Phillips?

KJ Phillips is a RESNA-certified Assistive Technology Professional and Seating and Mobility Specialist (ATP/SMS) based in Southern California.

With over more than 10 years working in seating and mobility, he has developed expertise in evaluating complex mobility needs, identifying appropriate equipment and configurations, and helping clients and care teams navigate the many variables involved in assistive technology.

His work has included complex wheelchair seating and positioning, mobility equipment, pressure management, functional assessment, and collaboration with clients, caregivers, therapists, suppliers, and other professionals.

KJ has also volunteered his expertise internationally with Liga International, participating in service trips supporting people with disabilities who need access to mobility equipment and assistive technology.

Making Complex Seating Easier to Understand

Wheelchair seating is rarely as simple as choosing a chair and adjusting a few components.

Posture, range of motion, muscle tone, pressure distribution, functional goals, transfers, transportation, environmental access, equipment compatibility, and changes over time can all influence a seating and mobility recommendation.

Small changes can have significant consequences.

That's one reason KJ's approach emphasizes understanding why a seating intervention works rather than simply memorizing a set of rules.

As Adaptive Solutions puts it:

Good seating is understood, not guessed.

That philosophy also shapes the company's educational work.

Helping the Next Generation of ATPs

Becoming a RESNA-certified ATP requires candidates to understand a remarkably broad range of assistive technology concepts.

For professionals preparing for the RESNA ATP certification exam, one of the challenges is figuring out how all of that information fits together.

It's easy to focus on memorizing devices, diagnoses, terminology, and individual facts. But ATP practice requires something more: the ability to assess a situation systematically and determine the most appropriate next step.

Through Adaptive Solutions, KJ teaches candidates how to develop that reasoning process.

Rather than treating ATP exam prep as a memorization exercise, his approach emphasizes understanding the assistive technology service delivery process and learning how to apply it to real-world scenarios.

That includes recognizing what information is missing, understanding the role of the ATP, identifying where a scenario falls within the service delivery process, and determining what should happen next.

Free ATP Exam Preparation

To make ATP education more accessible, KJ created a free 12-part ATP Exam Prep Course covering foundational concepts candidates should understand before taking the RESNA ATP exam.

The series explores topics such as assistive technology service delivery, assessment and intervention, clinical reasoning, ATP exam strategy, and common types of questions candidates may encounter.

The goal isn't simply to help someone remember more information on test day.

It's to help them think like an ATP.

Adaptive Solutions also offers additional ATP exam prep resources for candidates who want more structured help identifying knowledge gaps and planning what to study.

Supporting ATPs Beyond the Exam

Passing the ATP exam is only the beginning of working in assistive technology.

New ATPs may quickly encounter complex cases that don't fit neatly into a textbook example. Seating and mobility decisions often require balancing biomechanics, function, equipment limitations, client preferences, funding realities, and the physical environment.

Adaptive Solutions is developing resources not only for people preparing for certification, but also for professionals entering or advancing within the field.

Through early-career ATP coaching, individual consultation, and professional education, KJ helps practitioners strengthen the reasoning behind their decisions rather than relying solely on trial and error.

Training and Consulting for Organizations

Adaptive Solutions also works with organizations that want to strengthen their internal assistive technology expertise.

That can include organizations with employees pursuing ATP certification, rehabilitation teams looking to expand their seating and mobility knowledge, and companies that encounter complex assistive technology questions as part of their work.

Training can be adapted to the experience and needs of the team, with an emphasis on practical knowledge professionals can apply to real cases.

A Practical Approach to Assistive Technology

Assistive technology sits at the intersection of people, technology, healthcare, design, and the built environment.

That complexity is what makes the field valuable—but it can also make it difficult to learn.

KJ created Adaptive Solutions to make that knowledge more understandable and more useful, whether you're studying for the ATP exam, beginning your career in assistive technology, working through a difficult seating problem, or building a team that needs stronger ATP expertise.

Because when it comes to complex seating and mobility, “fine” isn't always a good fit.
